5 tips for creating a PowerPoint presentation

Note: This content was written prior to BrainStory, the brand that followed Slide Lab.

Creating a PowerPoint presentation is harder than you think. Firstly, you have to know that you have to invest time in order to make an impacting presentation, so that the final result is as you envision it. The truth is that most of the presentations we see on the market are monotonous, too long and sometimes even confusing. That is what happens when you make this common mistake in PowerPoint presentations: thinking everyone that will see the presentation has the same level of information, is equally motivated by its topic and is going to pay more attention to the content and less to the form.

In fact, the content is what matters most. But the truth is that there are tricks to make it exciting.

In this post, we show you the top 5 tips for a good PowerPoint presentation.

 1. Will you be presenting your content orally or with a readable document?

The techniques used for each type of document must be thought of from scratch and must necessarily be different. Do not use a document that you already have and merely present a topic. It will probably be too long, with overly detailed content and with little emphasis on key points.  Outline the story you want to tell and create a presentation taking into account your ultimate goal.

 2. Don’t use predefined PowerPoint templates

Yes, they do make work easier, but in addition to being monotonous, available templates create no visual impact. You should develop a layout for your presentation and customise each slide.

 3. Use high-quality images

While it is true that a PowerPoint presentation is quite time-consuming execution-wise, it is also true that an effective presentation requires strong visuals and high-quality images. Nowadays, there are free stock image banks that can be of help.

 4. Choose appropriate fonts

Companies generally have a graphic standards guide they must follow, with a scheme of allowed colours and fonts. Review your company’s restrictions and combine the several possibilities in an appealing way. Avoid fonts like Comic Sans or Time News Roman, which are unprofessional and unoriginal.

 5. Choose a colour scheme for your presentation

Define a colour scheme from the outset to create your PowerPoint presentation. Keeping consistency throughout your presentation will make you look professional and organised, and allow you to make much more creative slides. To highlight important topics, focus on colour contrasts.
